The spa town, or Kurort, of Gohrisch, is located about 35 kilometers from the Saxon capital Dresden on a rocky plateau in the "Kingdom of Stones". Here in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, "stones" is the name given to the buttes that majestically surround the town. Gohrisch is the oldest "summer resort" or Sommerfrische in Saxon Switzerland and was allowed to call itself an "air health resort" or Luftkurort as early as 1875 due to the favorable climate and the abundance of forests in the surrounding area. Around 1900 architecture of the town developed around the country houses and summer resorts with their typical balconies and wooden verandas, which still characterize the face of the village today. The nearest towns in the vicinity of the spa town of Gohrisch are Bad Schandau - the oldest spa town in Saxon Switzerland - and the town of Königstein with its famous fortress towering mightily above the town.
